Science of Small Things: Part I. Humus, Carbon Chemistry and The Soul of the Soil.

Of all things in life, the one that one most instantly relates to must be one’s mother and one’s seed, even if you are gay and terminator-gened.. The mother of all seeds must be mother earth herself. Not the earth as a planet of geography, but the mud of our creation and of our creativity and the earth of our sustenance.

This blog will be dealing mainly with humus, the dark top-soil of natural earth --- it is the soul of our soil. Because it is a blog on science there will, naturally, be some science in the blog. Since the concern here will be on the response of the soil to chemical fertilizers, the blog will have a considerably large section of chemistry in it. The idea here is to get the basic direction right although there are many micro details which have been condensed into a macro direction-finding theme.

At the end of this blog i drw attention to Peter Brooks' discussion on "Nothing coming from nothing" whic is really on turning from negative direction to positive direction at an instant of realization. This blog is an attempt (perhaps unnecessary) to influence towards that instant.

I do not make any apologies for the chemistry. It is the last frontier of science to be understood properly by otherwise intelligent people. It is also the most important environment-damaging frontier when left in wild, profit-making hands. The handling of chemistry now requires to be tamed the way nature has tamed it to derive benefits from it. Man must realize that he is made in the image of nature and not in that of a warsome, wrathful and vindictive god.

On the whole, I am taking responsibility, as a seventy-year-old chemist, to propose a direction of research which could be cheap and do-able by the young with time to spare ... and ambitions to keep as well. I think I am serving some purpose. The blog is not intended to be read in one sitting.

What's wrong?

Somewhere towards the beginning of this article I come to the surprising conclusion from published data (www.tradingeconomics.com) that the effect of fertilizer on increase in rate of grain production seems to parallel the increase in organic fertilizer production and is far less than the actual rate of increase of fertilizer production! Humus, as I had been taught in my school days, is nature’s fertilizer accumulated over years in the top soil. The topic of the usefulness of humus is pretty much dead now, thanks to contributions from the financial profits from science of big things.

As we are almost certain of the axiom that the profits from big things are almost alwways detrimental to a life of good quality, the science of small things should aim to restore the effects of this humus in a short time.

We take this earth so much for granted! Just like insensitive children take their parentage and their heritage.

At present times, these children say they live in a democracy and are free to do whatever they want as long as they have not done anything illegal as judged by a court of law. It so happens that some of these children seem to be the court of law themselves. In the process they ignore all wrongdoings and pander instead to the needs of a spoilt gadget-philic society that requires to conquer the discomforts of nature. Narure herself should now be acutely uncomfortable with these conquests.

We usually excuse these children because they are immature kids, after all. It does not matter if these kids range from Anna Hazare to people who dance at weddings and NGOs who use Bollywood sponsors for lighting up village nights with solar lights. After all, there is so much bollywood revenue lost when villagers prefer to have real (not virtual) fun in their nights.

When you have farmed and tilled your soil and sown your seeds and nurtured your crops that feed your family’s needs and after you have enjoyed your harvest festival, do you really require other conspicuously consumed merriments of the idle rich?

More importantly, will you succumb to the pressures of your multifarious agencies that tells you how to barter your self-contained satisfaction for a more global commercialisation? This commerce really benefits people who have no empathy with the soil, who cannot hold the soil in the palm of their hands and mourn when the soil is ill or rejoice in efforts you have made to maintain its health.

It now seems that any help for our soil can only come from those who are disinterested in pure commerce and hence effectively disenfranchised. If the society of farmers requires turning the tide of globally insensitive commerce that is ruining their soil, it will probably come from the younger people. (at heart and in mind and in stamina) who can make this choice, before they age and make a private commitment to something else.

Big Science vs Small Science

It is important to realize that the science of big things depend on reproducibility (which is important if one has to make profit) of results which, no matter how restrictive the conditions for reproducibility is, show prospects for commercial profit because of a deemed benefit to society. There is also a patented protection of their profits. Here it depends heavily on recognised scientists of recognised scientific institutes, who, in turn, prefer to depend on the larger funding from commercial agencies. This is most so in critical life-supporting businesses such as GMO food and fertilizers and drugs and pharmaceuticals. The price these scientists pay is that they may have to be sometimes extra careful in justifying claims (murmuring, dharmaraj-like, the real identity of Ashwathma, in the battle of Kurukshetra).

The science of big things would like to fund and be funded about grander, Monsanto-philic, schemes such as genetically modified Bt crops. Nothing of scientific value comes from nothing these “giants” would say. The giants move on to do what motivates them most: add value to their science so that something (more) should come from something (less)..

On the other hand, the science of small things cannot, for its own good, deviate from the path of making unbiased observations. Making commercial profit is not their immediate motive. It could be environment-friendly sustainability, for instance. A good candidate is the science of seemingly small things such as the very fundamental aspects of the life of the soil or humus and the way it influences her progenies. The benefits of humus cannot be reproduced in a court of law because the exact nature of humus that is patentable for commercial benefits is not known and is not likely to be known. Yet, there is a considerable amount of unknown that can be put to systematic scrutiny to quantify, if nothing else, the extent of our ignorance.

What can come from the science that seems to be about the science of small things, --- the science of nothing?

Humus of our past

As Maria in “Sound of Music” (and my nephews’ various Indian English moments) would sing:
Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
But somehere in my youth or child hood
I must have done something good


Without knowing it perhaps, lyricist Hammerstein II, was acknowledging the very prehistory that has so far shaped our immediate present. The way we act in the present will continue to shape the future generation even if the future generation may not realize what in their past shaped their present..

So let us say soil there was and soil shall it remain. It is what we have done with the soil and could do to it in the zwitschenzeit that is important for our cascade of presents that will ultimately shape our future. One, of course, should not think of soil as inanimate and inorganic and dead when one justifies the use of inorganic fertilizers. Its like fighting death with death.

One could perhaps write in the context of nothing come from nothing, the almost equivalent and certainly (if you are sensitive to profound things) more profound phrase “life comes from life” or “organs from organs” or the mundane but, if you think of it, more prototypical phrase “organic comes from organic”. This could be surprising if you think of soil as something inorganic, like clay, or mica (which usually has some common lighter metallic elements in it like aluminium or .magnesium; I will have some future blog reasons for mentioning this part).

One of the most important examples of good science coming from seeming nothing is that which came from Darwin’s work after he had completed his Beagle journey that led to his Origin of Species. One has to remember that when one enters new field one is almost at the same level as a young student working with an experienced research guide. The last major work of Charles Darwin is on The formation of Vegetable Moulds through the action of Worms (I have used information about this mainly from a recent review by U. Kutschera and J.M. Elliott, Appl. Environm. Soil Sci. 2: 1-11 (2010)).

Darwin himself thought that it was a subject of small importance and that he worked on it because it interested him. This work had its impact with the concept of bioturbation which dealt with biological reworking of soils by “ ... ingestionof the topsoil, and its mixing, grinding, and digestion in the gut, continually exposed rock particles to chemical alteration, increasing the amount of soil ...” It started the area of earthworm research, finding intelligence in the earthworm, which was till then thought to be useful only as bait for fish. This conclusion led to ridiculing of Darwin culminating in a famous cartoon entitled “man is a worm” by Linley Sambourne in Punch around 1881 (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/ucl-views/0809/punch). The evolution from chaos through worm, spermatozoid creatures, apes etc and finally to a human (Darwin) . This cartoon is perhaps anticipated in Psalm 119:141: “Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts” (rules or principles teaching correct behaviour). Strangely enough, this cartoon which was meant to ridicule Darwin turns out to be quite in line with recent research by Telford, on “A single origin of the central nervous system?” Cell, vol. 129, no. 2, pp. 237–239, 2007.

Although Darwin’s publication on earthworms was a year before his death, his actual observations on earthworms started in 1837 when he was as young as 28. At this age, the best age for starting the science of small things, he is said to have spent his time in the farm of his more famous uncle, Josiah Wedgwood (his mother was Susannah Wedgwood). There Darwin sketched a vertical section of the soil and was the first scientist to have pointed out that the top-soil layer of vegetable earth, now called humus, of every humid country was due to bioturbation caused by earthworms. Darwin would attribute the dark colour of the topsoil (section (a) in the figure above) to a mixture of partially digested leaves and mineral soil in the faecal casts.

Darwin noticed that the layer (c), about six inches from the top, was due to a covering fifteen years earlier with fertilizers from burnt limestone that contains shell fragments, ashes and other minerals.. This gave Darwin an estimate of the amount of top soil produced per year by bioturbation from earthworms as around 25 tons per hectare per year. This is roughly 10 to 20 time the weight of fertilizers used per year in India or China. It turns out that the use of chemical fertilizer has increased nearly fifteen times during the pasc 50 years in India and China.

In an article on the Overuse of Chemical Fertilizers in China, Williams of Macalester University, concluded that “ ... farmers in China are applying more chemical fertilizer than is economically optimal” Williams noted that “ .. in the early 1960’s, as the limitations of organic fertilizer were realized, the emphasis was shifted to chemical fertilizers. “ It is important perhaps to note that in Fig 1 of her article the rate of use of organic fertilizers roughly parallels the rate of growth in grain yield, which, in turn, is roughly fifty times less than the rate of growth of use of chemical fertilizers. This is a major surprise even to me since I tend to be cynical --- and thereby non-objective --- about the benefits of fertilizer.


It not only serves to confirm what is now well known --- that one requires more and more fertilizers to maintain a crop level, but it also serves to highlight the view point that organic fertilizers can do the job as well. I cannot think of a better reason for debunking the myth that chemical fertilizers are necessary to feed a growing population. It only serves to feed a growing ammonia industry for making fertilizers.

There are more surprising statistics for me. Sugar cane production constitutes ~ 90% of Indian agricultural production (if Renuka Mahadevan’s article on Productivity Growth in Indian Agriculture from Queensland Australia is to be believed).
The ratio of the hugely water-intensive sugarcane production to food grain production in India is nearly 11:1 while in China it is nearly 3:1. USA and Europe do not seem to grow sugarcane! "Why waste water?" they must be saying, when poorer countries are dying to waste their water for the yankee dollar? Is it any wonder India has the largest number of diabetics?
The ratio of food grain production to tobacco production is 10.3 in USA and it is 5.4 in India. USA produces foodgrain nearly three times that of India. This is so even though USA has less than 25% of India’s population!
The sugar-cane industry also serves the vice-building (revenue earning) alcohol and tobacco industry.

I am not at all certain now that a ruler of the soil had any connection with the tiller of the soils. It seems we may have taken them for granted. In our country we always have had harvest festivals which is a festival of farmers, who formed the majority of the population.I was surprised, therefore, to read the following. “Paul Louis Courier quotes from La Bruyere the following striking picture of the condition of the French peasantry in his time (late eighteenth century) "One sees certain dark, livid, naked, sunburnt, wild animals, male and female, scattered over the country and attached to the soil, which they root and turn over with indomitable perseverance. They have, as it were, an articulate voice, and when they rise to their feet, they show a human face. They are, in fact, men; they creep at night into dens, where they live on black bread, water, and roots. They spare other men the labor of ploughing, Bowing, and harvesting, and therefore deserve some small share of the bread they have grown." For such rulers, as the present rulers are likely to be, farming is taken for granted. It is only the profit from farming that they are interested in.

Such an attitude, one would think, cannot be allowed to continue, of course. A knowledge of the soul of the soil would seem to be more important for human survival than what could as well be the useless jingle-less stacks of money.

What is Humus?

The soil is as animate as any of us can ever hope to be once we acknowledge the humus of the soil.

So, being an analytical scientist, we have to ask the (vocationally stupid) question that no real farmer will ask.

It turns out that even those who have written on the subject do not really know what humus is. The one most certain thing about humus is that it exists ,,, in the sense that one knows what one was referring to. Apart from that its “… most conspicuous feature is the lack of specific knowledge concerning the organic matter of the soil.” (Schreiner and Shorey 1909).

We need to ask the “What is humus?” question first of all to learn what humus is not (sometimes referred to as vegetable earth) before one convinces other vocations about things they should or should not do to preserve life in the soil. Most of the uncertainties in the definition of humus comes from some definitions of humus that I have picked up at random from the literatture on the net (quoted in italics).

Humus is a kind of amorphous, brown or brownish black,hydrophilic, acidic, polydispersed organic matter and moredispersed widely in soil, sediment, and water (such as lakes,rivers, oceans and groundwater, etc.). It is not only a major source of soil nutrients but also has a significant impact to physical, chemical and biological properties of soil, it is one of the indicators of soil fertility.

Decomposition of dead roots, green manures, grass clippings, leaves and so forth does not necessarily yield the correct biochemical properties to result in the formation of humus as the only precursors of humic acids are amino acids, which must come from a source of protein … compost alone (made out of carbohydratres) are a poor source of the humic acids

Humic acids are flexible aliphatic aromatic highly functionalized molecules that can act as photosensitizers, retain water, bind to clays, at as plant growth stimulants and scavenge toxic pollutants.

The important feature of humus has been outlined by Waksman (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1925) who would write “When organic matter, in the form of green manure, plant stubble, straw, leaves, roots, etc., is added to the soil, decomposition sets in immediately, as can be conveniently demonstrated by an increase in the evolution of carbon dioxide. The rate and nature of decomposition depend upon the organisms concerned and soil environmental conditions. Sooner or later the rate of decomposition becomes. more or less uniform, after the easily available ingredients of the organic matter are decomposed; the residual organic matter then becomes a part of the soil, is converted into "humus" or is said to be "humified." This "humus" decomposes only very slowly and will persist in normal Foils for considerable time.”

What are the benefits of Humus?

It is not a myth that forest cover prevents floods because the humus retains water. Once in 1980, when .Lalitha and I were encouraged by Sunderlal Bahuguna’s daughter to get away from an international environmental team that was visiting Bahuguna’s ashram in Silyara in the Himalayas, we visited Gangi, trekking along the Bhilangana. There were virgin Rhododenfron forests. Walking on the soil of that forest was such an experience. The soil was so soft and springy that is seemed like a huge sponge. It did seem that this sponge couls soak up a large amount of water.

In an article of 1868 Geoff Marsh had written: “The surface of a forest, in its natural condition, can never pour forth such deluges of water as flow from cultivated soil. Humus, or vegetable mould, is capable of absorbing almost twice its own weight of water. The soil in a forest of deciduous foliage is composed of humus, more or less unmixed, to the depth of several inches, sometimes even of feet, and this stratum is usually able to imbibe all the water possibly resulting from the snow which at any one time covers, or the rain which in any one shower falls upon it. But the vegetable mould does not cease to absorb water when it becomes saturated, for it then gives off a portion of its moisture to the mineral earth below, and thus is ready to receive a new supply; and, besides, the bed of leaves not yet converted to mould takes up and retains a very considerable proportion of snow-water, as well as of rain.

Marsh would add “The hygroscopicity of humus or vegetable earth is much greater than that of any mineral soil, and consequently forest ground, where humus abounds, absorbs the moisture of the atmosphere more rapidly and in larger proportion than common earth”.. He would add “... unhappily, the primitive forests are disappearing so rapidly before the axe of the woodman, that we shall never be able to estimate with accuracy the climatological action of the natural wood, though all the physical functions of artificial plantations will, doubtless, one day be approximately known.”

The science of small things can ask how one can artificially restore the top soil and save the world from the tyranny of excessive or useless advertisement-driven application of chemical fertilizer? A stressed soil gives a stressed life with the corollary that a life in a mutually beneficial relationship with the soil will have less stress (even if it means tremendous loss to corporate revenues and yuppie life-styles of the conspicuous consumer).

Waksman then asks the important question: “Why does this take place, why does a part of the organic matter decompose rapidly and a part only very slowly? … most of the nitrogen and minerals introduced into the soil with the natural organic materials remain bound up in this soil "humus." How does that take place?”

The other question for the science of small things is do we need to know, at least roughly, the essential ingredients that are required of the top-soil, to give it all the benefits that humus gives?

Some Chemistry in the Science of Small Things

Since we have to understand the need (or not) of chemical fertilizers, this blog will contain some chemistry. There will be no apologies. The language and the symbols of chemistry is something that one has to understand if one has to counter the claimed miracles of chemistry without countering some empirically established (the only kind of establishment one should care to bow to) chemical philosophy that need not require a QED.

Typically, one thinks of the role of carbon dioxide and water to produce the world’s energy requirement in the shape of carbohydrates, which we write as a string of n CHOH groups or n(CHOH). Usually the process is written as
6CO2 + 6H2O ---> 6CHOH + 6O2 (1)
For aerobic as well as illuminated life equation 1 is part of a cleansing photosynthetic reaction on going from the left-hand-side to the right-hand-side.

Eqn 1 is a spin non-conserving reaction since oxygen as evolved is a paramagnetic molecule and the others are not. Because of this this is not a spontaneous reaction and requires the agency of excited states (accessed by light), spin-conserving intermediates,(accessed by transition metals as in chlorophyll) and energy producing ligands (such as adenine triphosphates, ATP, as in the dark carbon-inserting reaction of the Calvin cycle) which drive the endothermic reaction to the right in eqn 1,

Eqn 1 is CO2-scavenging on going from left to right and CO2 polluting in the reverse direction (from right to left), even if it is useful in producing energy by burning wood. It should be the energetically favoured spontaneous step when a plant dies once the spin conservation is taken care of. When spin conservation is not guaranteed the reverse rate will be slow.

The actual chemical work on molecular structural aspects of Humus is difficult, because by its very nature it cannot be definitive, The chemistry of the humus depends on the nature of the soil, the forst canopy, the rainfall, water sources and so on. The closest one may get to is the structure of a naturally occurring highly oxidised version of humic acid obtained from leonardite (see http://www.phelpstek.com/portfolio/samples/humic_acid.html) which is shown below. It is the oxidised form that is thought to be useful in in breaking up compacted soil or clay and helps in providing micronutrients to the plant. In the context of earthworm and top soil, this activation of the soil must be similar to bioturbation. As one can see humic acid has a section (to the left viewing the structure) which has a large density of oxygen while the right is less so and has probably some features of cholesterol, (which, I thought, in my B. Sc (chem.) days, to be a very complex structure).

This begs the question of whether the synthetic pathway for carbohydrates stems from the chemistry of carbon and water alone. For anerobic and dark conditions,, which must be dominant in buried layers, we may, eliminating 6O2 from 6CO2 in the LHS and 6O2 from the right hand side of eqn1, we obtain carbohydrates as
C + H2O  CHOH (2)
A more familiar form of this reaction (catalyzed by acids is the hydration of ethylene to ethanol or the dehydration of ethanol to ethylene.
CH2=CH2 + H2O < --- > C2H5OH

Eqn (2) is the most simple way of getting carbohydrates --- by hydrating carbon. It eliminates the need for using carbon dioxide or oxygen as such and requires only the presence of carbon and water under anerobic conditions. Of course, you cannot place diamond or graphite in water and get carbohydrates. But you may do so when you start with what one may now call nascent carbon or an active form of carbon such as what we now know as carbon nanotubes, C60-like buckyballs, grapheme sheets.

Both the reverse and forward directon in eqn 2 is not environment unfriendly. The reverse direction in eqn 2 could suggest a route for the formation of humus while the forward direction would suggest a step for the generation of carbohydrates and other biofuels for bio-species without requiring the agency of sunlight.

As far as I am aware, eqn 2 has not been seriously considered as an alternative pathway. So overwhelming has been the evidence for the photosynthesis pathways and so high the level of funding for it, that it has not been thought necessary to look for an alternative,

At the same time, when the photosynthetic pathways were being established, elemental carbon chemistry was confined to the reactions of the stable allotropes of carbon --- the layered graphite with an hexagonal network of carbon, and diamond with a tetrahedral network. These compounds are characterized by their long-range ordered structure in solids. They are also rather inert to reactions with water, oxygen carbon dioxide at room temperature.

We now know that there are other allotropes of carbon which have at least one dimension that is very small or of nano-scale (0.001 micron to .01 micron). The three-dimensional (3D) nano-carbon is a foot-ball shaped sphere now known as bucky ball or fullerene, after the xtraordinary Buckminster Fuller, the motivator for geodesic domes. The 2D nano-version are the carbon nanotubes the smallest of which are the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). The 1D version is graphene, which is a single sheet of graphite.

These nano-carbons are prone to oxidation near room temperature more easily than the macro-sized carbons, graphite and diamond. Graphite itself is known to be oxidized by strong oxidizing agents to form what is known as graphite oxide with C:O ratio varyin between 2:1 to 3:1. Atomically thin monolayers of grapheme oxide (see picture above) may be obtained from graphite oxide using alkaline solutions. The structure of this grapheme oxide is similar to that of oxidized humic acid or another constituent of humus, fulvic acids (see picture above) in terms of the density of oxxygens relative to the carbons. Lignin, which is the most studied component of wood also has aspects of its structure which are similar to that of humic and fulvic acids. Graphene oxides and lignin differ from humic and fulvic acids by not having nitrogen atoms as part of their structure,

It is perhaps pertinent to emphasize that the oxygens are deliberately coloured the red colour of blood in the above diagrams, because of the critical role oxygen plays in the dynamics of carbohydrates in life just as it is in our blood.

What is not clear is whether these nano-carbons are inert to oxygen, carbon dioxide, water at room temperature. If one is not prejudiced, the signal that one gets from all the published noise on nano-carbons is that it is very difficult to get a condensed (non-gaseous) phase of these nanocarbons without oxygen contamination.

I have doodled below some possible schemes for the relation between carbon and carbohydrates. I think that they can happen with the multi-functional (enzymatic) soil with its nano carbon and nano cabon-oxygen systems given the large number of organic or inorganic chemicals, pH conditions, minerals, whatever (click to expand).

Evidence for the above reactions at a small molecular scale is not difficult to come by. These reactions usually occur in the laboratory at temperatures considerably higher than room temperature. The contention is that these are larger molecules which have considerable double bond character or are substituted considerably by heteroatomic and more electronegative atoms. They are in a soil which consists of various minerals and enzymes and biospecies that have their own room-temperature chemistry. There are also nano-space such as micropores, an lamellar clay spaces that increase solvation effects and electric fields that are known to catalyze reactions. For instance inorganic zeolites with pores of molecular dimensions are known to mimic tertiary protein structure of an enzyme leading to the development of what is known as "ship-in-a-bottle" metal complexes which has, for instance, oxygen chemistry similar to that of haemoglobin. The critical aspects of these catalysts is that the geometry of the activation site closely mimic that of the transition state geometry of the reaction thereby reducing the barrier to reaction and increasing the reaction rate at lower temperatures. The advantage of an enzyme is that their geometry is flexible and adaptable as compared to zeolites. This aspect is likely to be reproduced in bioactive humus.

Quite early in the era of C60 science my friend Carlo Taliani of Bologna drew my attention to a publication from his group (Synthetic Metals, 1993) in which they found that oxygen molecules are trapped on the surface of C60. These molecules desorb as diamagnetic singlet oxygen on illumination with light. There would be no problem of spin conservation in eqn 1 when diamagnetic oxygen molecules react with diamagnetic carbon. The formation of oxygenated carbon products, including carbohydrates, would be favoured in this case

I had once ventured in the early 1990s to make nano particles of metal oxides and sulphides by decomposing appropriate organic polymers and inorganic salts in nitrogen. I had thought that the nanoparticles would be in a graphitic medium.

I did not publish any of the results from the considerable volume of experiments we had done because of patenting possibilities, and also because, quite frankly, as experimentalists we Indians are reluctant to worry about reproducibility in India. My colleagues did not have the inclination to repeat and tidy up the experiments to the extent I would have liked.. There was no real patenting expertise available in the CSIR in those days and we ended up with one (US Patent No. 5,643,508) as a statistical information of use to the DG-CSIR after a delay of many years.

I always found photoelectron and infra-red spectroscopy evidence for considerable amount of oxygen in the nano-composite we had made even if I did not have any oxygen in the starting samples. It was Carlo’s information that made me rethink on the nature of nano-carbon I had in my composites. The nano-carbon has a spontaneous tendency to take up oxygen from carbon dioxide, water or air.

It would now seem that the nano-carbons with their double bonds have highly reactive carbon sites which may take up paramagnetic oxygen which are converted to –C-O- linkages quickly (in crop cycle time scales certainly) either through the agency of water, acids, singlet oxygen states and so on.

A coincidence of circumstances can make the soil with its various functional groups in reactive nano-scale laboratories behave like a swarm of enzyme-like functionalities. Given a desired direction (say, from a potential difference caused by a perturbation such as rainfall, tilling, sowing) the fertile, many-functional, soil seems to come up with a combinatorial solution to sustain its function of providing endlessly like Annapurna, the goddess who provides perpetual nourishment without seeming to require material inputs.

Role of clay-rich soil

Clays are metastable layered materials which are formed at low temperatures by the erosion of silica-containing rocks by slightly acidic aqueous solutions containg dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide, nitroegen oxides and so on. The clays are aluminosilicates which have corner-shared tetrahedrally coordinated (Al,Si)O4 groups. Since Al cation is trivalent and Si cation is tetravalent charge-neutrality requires the replacement of divalent oxide (O2-) ions by monovalent hydroxide ion (-OH). The –OH groups are critical to stabilising the layered structures. The hydrogen in the –OH groups can be exchanged with potassium or sodium cations which become more easily solvated in the presence of water. Removal of aluminium by leaching with strong acids such as nitric acid or sulphuric acid removes-OH groups from the clay and subsequent mineralization to silica-rich oxides.

Since these clays are metastable they are rhermodynamically prone to transformation to the more stable three-dimensional oxides.In such a case the beneficial-water-storing properties of clay is lost. This, in turn, would affect the quality of the humus.

I have outlined below a scheme of “cartoons” which could seem to be obvious truths but which does not seem to have been put forth as a reason for the surprising lack of increase in productivity of food grains per unit of chemical fertilizer used.

In the figure below a rough sketch of the role of humus in enhancing the rle of clay in healthy soil is shown. To the left of the figure a rough sketch os a typical phyllosilicate clay such as montmorillonite a Wikipedia formula of which is (Na,Ca)0.33(Al,Mg)2(Si4O10)(OH)2•nH2O.

The structure of clays may be thought of as thin (~ 1 nanometer) slabs of alumina-silicates with surface hydroxyl groups (top centre of above figure, click to expand). In a medium containing water and metal ions such as that of potassium, the –OH groups are exchanged –to form, for example, -OK groups. These groups become solvated easily by water. Because the solvating water molecule has a different chemical potential from free water outside, space between the layers increase by accommodating more water and equalizing the chemical potential.

The oxidised form of humic acid (HA) is known to contain –OH groups, the hydrogens of which may be exchanged with potassium, for instance. This helps in the HA binding to the –OK groups in the soil, Because of the large size and the multifunctionalIity of HA the swelling between the layers may be stabilized (central blue cartoon in above figure). Such swollen layers are stabilised n the presence of humus. The swollen layers are then amenable to bioturbations through agencies such as earthworms as proposed by Darwin. There are other important factors, of course, but, I think, Darwin’s evidence for the rate of accumulation of top soil because of earthworm activity remains the most impressive aspect.

In the absence of humus-forming leaf litter or forst canopy, the intercalated humus-derived acids are removed. They are likely to be replaced by more acidic compounds groups derived from fertilizer additives which contain MOx compounds such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxides. These acids are not only likely to leach out components derived from substances such as humic acids but also the lower valent mrysl ion such as aluminium or magnesium or iron ions which cause the incorporation of –OH groups in the clay layer. Further, the incorporation of interlayer, Si-MOx-Si (M = C, N, S) linkages coul lead to an irreversible conversion to stable S-O-Si layers and the loss of clay-like characteristics and a desertification as schematically illustrated below. Such a process finally leads to conversion silica-rih soil which do not swell and retain water causing a desertification.

The desertification or loss of clay-like character.is similar to that obtained by heating or calcining clay. Wikipedia informs us that calcined montmorillonite is used as a soil conditioner for playing fields or for growing stunting growth ofplants as in, whaI think, is athe perverse bonsai culture, which can be encouraged in hilly terrains where soil run-offs donot allow top soil to form. The desertification process also prevents (see Wikipedia) the intercalation of lipid molecules that are so necessary to form first micelles and then vesicles and membrane walls.

This increases of salinity or soil- acidity has marked effects on rich-soil-feeding (endogaeic) earthworms and less so on top-soil litter-feeding (epigaeic) earthworms. It would seem that the leaching out of the intercalated organic matter has different effects on different earthworms.

It is perhaps amusing to note that despite Darwin’s experience on Origin of Species it seems that he had not worried about the species of the earthworm (there are more than 4000 of them; (see review of book by Munnoli et al on soil-earthworm plant relationship, published by Global Science e-books). It now appears that you require specific earthworms for specific soils. Exotic species in commercial plantations can spoil the fauna of the soil. For example, earthworms and other faunal species have disappeared from Indian tea plantations.

We must preserve the original soil to preserve the original species which takes from the land and gives back to it the same way it took. Exotic species are unlikely to do so. .

The soil becomes stressed due to increase in salinity because of high amounts o carbonic. Sulphurous, nitrous or nitric, hydrochloric acids as well as high amount so sodium and chloride ions. There is what is known as a physiological drought because of which the osmotic potential of water in the soil which have negative effects on plant growth, especially on the uptake of water by the roots. For example, the formation of CHOH in eqn 2 by the hydration of active carbon in nano-carbons could be a source for the uptake of carbohydrate from the soil without the agency of light. All it requires the pre-formation of carbonaceous matter in the soil, which we call humus.
Evidence for eqn 2 is well-known. When ethylene is mixed with steam and passed over a catalyst consisting of solid silicon dioxide coated with phosphoric(V) acid. The temperature used is 300°C and the pressure is about 60 to 70 atmospheres. Such strong conditions may not be necessary when the double-bond C=C linkages are found in nano-carbons. For example, it is known that hydrophobic C60 becomes hydrophilic on contact with surface of water because of the incorporation of –OH groups in the C60 framework. This gives the aqueous solution a orangish colour.with an absotion maximum between 400-500 nm.(chlorophylls , beta-carotene also have an absorption peak in this region).
It remains to be investigated whether the fine primary roots, that are known to have the function of water and nutrient uptake are also grow by the uptake of the fundamental carbohydrate building block –CHOH-groups without necessarily requiring oxygen in the photosynthetic route involving the leaves.

Once in March of 2009 while driving down the Konkan ghats on the way from Hatip (where our very good friensa, the Raos have jad the courage and perseverance to set up an organic friendly farms) we came across what looked like forest fires (left of picture below, click to expand). The popular mythe of city-bred industry-sponsored environmentalists is that these fires are caused by villagers as part of their slash and burn strategies, There isthe lore that controlled burning reduces severe forest fires later. Some say that the forest fires are to clear forests for farming. All this may be so to some extent, but the traditional farmer may have another reason.

However, on approaching closer to the area of smoke, we found (centre of photographs above) that patches which were previously coated had central regions where leaves and branches were pile to be burnt or had been recently burnt. This practice was common in the area and elsewhere it turned out later. They were perhaps returning the nano carbon to the soil in this process and generating carbohydrates from the soil. This speculation gave us a better appreciation of the smoke-enhanced sunset (right of above) of that day.

As a starting point, the intellectually abled younger generation of the sub-twenty kind have the advantage of being scientifically unbiased. They may carry out field work on quantifying aspects of the practice that I just referred to above.

There does not seem to be a unique reason for the practice of burning crop fields, nor what benefits the burning brings. In general, empiricists tend to think that burning fallen leaves is not beneficial to the soil. Searching the net for older references, I found in The Farmer’s Register vol 2 printed in 1835 the following comments for the Tobacco Planter in USA:-
The tobacco planter’s mode of cleaning new ground by raking up the leaves and trash and half-decayed vegetable matter, and then burning it all is a wasteful operation. These materials if spread on exhausted spots in the fields, and ploughed in, would impart life enough to throw up such a crop of rye, or oast, or clover, as to make it easy afterwards to restore them in their original fertility. ... He that advocates burning will be convinced of its rapidly impoverishing effects .. (and that) ... this process will entirely exhaust the vegetable matterin the soil...

From the recent report of a Training modeule on the managemenet of soil fertility in Watershed Support Services and Activities Network (WASSAN), Secunderabad, I gleaned the following:
In summer before ploughing, many farmers collect together the crop residues from their fields and burn them. This is done to tidy up the fields and to prevent damage to the legs of bullocks or buffaloes while ploughing. A lot of crop residues can badly affect land preparation, sowing germination, importantly burning also reduces the risk of pests and deceases hosted by crop residues being carried over to the next crop. Ash from the burning stubble and other crop residues adds some fertility back to the soil. Especially potassium, but most organic matter and nutrients are lost. For this reason, burning of crop residues is generally discouraged.

The sugar cane industry in India has another massive problem with it producing nearly 15 million tonnes of leaves. It would also seem that there would be a significant amount of water saved considering that for a full season, one requires 15 million liters of water per hectare for producing 100 ton of millable sugar cane. The sugar cane leaves have lignin and silica which do not decompose easily and are not good as fodder for animals. As such they are of little use so that they are treated as ‘sugar-cane trash”. The “trash” is traditionally burnt. When you think that 1 ton of firewood is equivalent 20 million BTU, and 3500 BTU gives 1KWH of electricity, 15 million tonnes of sugar seems to be equivalent o 1 million megawatt of electricity. This “trash” has the capacity of generating several thousand times the power generated by solar and wind energy. This seems to be a staggering number even if there is a mistake in the calculation.

If sugar cane was not grown at all and wood was grown instead, the power obtained by burning the wood would seem to be the most efficient way for using solar energy to generate electricity. Not that I am a great advocate for electricity because it would be wated anyway --- say, for advertisements and lighting up the nights. If the wood is from fruit-beariing trees or bamboo, or sorghum (jowar) crops one would imagine that food scarcity, or shortages in building material, or non-cotton fibres for dress, or sorghum jiggery instead of sugar, sorghum crop for thatched huts would solve most of our shirtage problems. It would only be at the expense of the diabetes industry, the cement industry, and the builders lobby.

Nowadays such thoughts are considered reactionary and harmful to the prosperity of human beings, especially those who are encourages to seek only virtual or exotic realities in pursuit of strengthening a World-Bank or IMF-encouraged economy. Maybe such "dangerous" thoughts would be useful again when reality or and/or realization (even of the Marxist kind) sounds ominous bells. They seem to be doing so now no matter how much counter spin is used in propaganda machines.

It would seem it may be better to be prepared.

How will you use, say, the big amounts of sugar-cane leaves if you are dumped with them? One may imagine that the leaves from sugar-cane could serve to create humus in the soil as well and restore the fertility of the soil that has been now seemingly damaged by the use of fertilizers.

If one knew how?

The more pressing problem is that healthy humus has been created over long times. How can we restore humus-like characteristics to the soil? Does the burning of leaves provide a quick-fix to some extent?

I think one important approach could be an investigation of the way one burns wood so that it adds fertility to the soil.

It should be perhaps a low-temperature burning in the presence of water and in the vicinity of soil. I have found from personal experience that on heating nitrogen and oxygen-containing polymers mixed with metal salts of organic acids under anaerobic conditions a nano-composite of oxygenated and hydrogenated carbon with small amounts of nitrogen (which I will call as CHONx) is obtdained as a nano-scale composite with metal oxide, This nano-composite when heated above 500-600 in anaerobic conditions become graphitic with loss of water and carbon monoxide or dioxide. It is this partially graphitised CHONx (or G-CHONx) metal oxide nano-composite that acts as good lithium-ion conductors showing good potential for lithium ion batteries, super-ionic conductors and under suitable conditions also as supercapcitors.

It is not practical to heat crop residues under anaerobic conditions although there seem to have been some attempts to get charcoal blocks from sugar cane leaves for fuel purposes using this method.

When the “leafy trash” is burnt as a big heap with smokeless high flames the temperature exceeds 500-600 C and one obtains mainly G-CHONx-like carbon which is not beneficial.

On the other hand, burning large amounts of not so dry leaves spread on soil in a thin layer (as in the middle of figure above) such that only a thick water-vapour-laden smoke as in the forest smoke on the left of the figure above) is obtained could provide CHONx material with possibilities of enriching the to- soil with CHONx-clay nano composites that could serve as humus-like precursors. When this happens the smoke could temporarily make the atmosphere filled with “brown cloud”-like or smog-like dust particles at low altitudes. For low-temperature fires one does not expect this cloud to lead to the more dangerous high-altitude pollution.

I know from experience that polymers which would otherwise decompose and in nitrogen and evaporate without leaving any non-volatile residue would form a nanocomposite with metal oxides when they are formed simultaneously by co-heating with a metal compounds. . Heating leaves at low temperatures may, therefore, allow such oxide-CHONx nano-composites to be formed. One may therefore, if one is lucky, begin to mimic the bioturbation of earthworms noticed by Darwin and probably noticed through the images without any fanfare or surprise by tillers of the soil.

We may have now managed to convince financially motivated farmers to maintain “modern” agricultural practices of using fertilizers and excessive water. The SOST can experiment on the influence of CHONx fired by various methods using various leaves from various canopies on plant-growth when admixed in the soil. One will not require expensive equipment to start this work.

The most appropriate way to work on the effect of artificial CHNOx would be to working in conjunction with farmers who are already using CHNOx as in the Konkan example above. One can learn from their experiences and record and experiment further.

One does nto expect the top-soil to be as healthy as the naturally formed humus. One learns in any case and one can only benefit in a non-corporate sense from this learning. On the other hand low-temperature firing of spread foliage cannot be doing more environmental harm.

The turning point: when nothing comes from nothing?

We may now interpret the sayig (Genesis) “Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return” as an expression of “carbohydrates thou art and unto carbohydrate thou shalt return” or better still “humus thou art and unto humus thou shalt return”. In the in-between life comes and goes in its never ending cycle helped by the brown soul of the soil.

In the process it would seem as if nothing has changed, --- not despite, but because of the life in between. Nothing can only come from nothing, eventually.

Every philosophical system stresses the fact of nothing coming from nothing or ex nihilo nihil fit, which, I suppose, could mean that nothing can be created from or disappear into nothing. But it does not dispute the issue that nothing could be existing forever. It is just the way we grow out of it or into it that we see life.

Maintaining that state close to zero is important in, what my background would assert, a combined annihilation/creation or destruction/creation sense of Siva.

I chanced upon a net-piece (http://direct.vtheatre.net/doc/brook.html) of Peter Brooks on “Does nothing come from nothing?” . This is the title of his Edwards Jones lecture in 1994. I have no personal experience of Peter Brooks but I did see his Mahabharatha and I was very impressed. The scene of Krishna talking to Ptince Arjuna on the battlefield is so different from what we are used to in our own imagery but so much more powerful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B4Z1PB97KY) than we have imagined . Peter Brooks’ stage-manship shows up when he uses only a chariot wheel to depict the war scene.

What struck me in this article was his insistence on the instant of a scene.

"So I ask you : Does nothing come from nothing ? For instance, if one takes a purely behaviourist view on the living process, if every single action of a human being comes from inner conflicts and pressures whose causes can be traced to recognisable, social, cultural, racial, environmental factors, if this is true, then every single form of behaviour out of which life and theatre are made comes from "Something". … Nothing in the theatre has any meaning "before" or "after". Meaning is "now". An audience comes to the theatre for one reason only, which is to live a certain experience and an experience can only take place at the moment when it is experienced. … What has been up till then individual experiences becomes shared, unified. At the moment when the mass of people becomes one, there is one silence and that silence you can taste on the tongue."

He was reminiscing about the talk after the performance he gave to inmates of French psychiatric hospital. Brooks was struck by the audience and felt “…it was quite an extraordinary experience because of the intensity of the listening. In fact, it compelled the actors to have a quite unusual degree of sensitivity. They felt that the least image that they projected could easily go too far and be dangerous to the patients.“ When they gave the same performance to the psychiatrists of the hospital “ … we could actually feel and hear the movement of four hundred brains, debating with themselves whether they agreed or disagreed with what they were seeing. And this produced a hum that was quite audible.

"When, through a whole complex series of factors, everyone is stimulated to an unusual intensity of perception, then the actor, the actor's body, one actor's interrelation with another, the whole group's interrelation with one another all create a new form of interrelation with the audience. Out of this comes a genuine participation of all who are present because there is a living flow that is uniting the separate entities into one field of life. When this happens, the shared experience turns from being a negative zero into a zero that is climbing up a scale of quality, until it eventually reaches a level of perception in which the zero is positive. … At this level, Nothing can come from Nothing. The dynamics of performance can bring something out of nothing, until a true nothing that comes from nothing returns to nothing again."

Brooks was talking about the transition from “reducing to zero” to “increasing from zero”. This is the classical turning point in physics where, in one dimension, the particle in motion stops and starts a return motion.

At this instant of the turning point when action becomes we should not be in Eliot’s Gerontion (“civilization gone rotten” Grover Smtih)
What will the spider do,
Suspend its operations, will the weevil
Delay? De Bailhache, Fresca, Mrs. Cammel, whirled

There is a chance to be born again from our roots using the small-science understanding buried in the dark humus soul of our soil.

We should not be in Gerontion.

Even if it takes us some time to get out of it.

The turn of the very common men Anna and Baba. Not Mahtamas

This I promise is going to be a very short blog. I have said what I wanted to say about Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev in earlier blogs (Lokpal I: Corruption in the Fast track; and Lokpal II: Fastin patterns).

The country is now facing the pestilence of a disease of being honester than thou spread by the cronies and followers of two men of very deservingly simple intelligence. These men have considerable ability to believe in their greatness as thrust upon them by those who would benefit from it. These are people like Kiran Bedi a failed police officer and Kejriwal a failed IIT engineer who wasted national wealth by not becoming an engineer and instead sought and got a revenue officer's post for god knows what reason except the obvious.

When we look at ourselves we should not require any convincing of our own intrinsic corruption.

It seems that those who are angry are so, not because others are corrupt, but because they do not themselves have the opportunity to be as corrupt as they would like to be.

Some of us are proud of our yoga tradition as brought down, say, by Krishnamacharya, BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi jois, and so many other learned scholars. Where are they in our eyes now? Do we have to suffer the very common Ramdev?

Where is the refined culture of our singers and dancers and philosophers?

Why are we so mired by the instance gobblers of virtual space?

The antics of Baba Ramdev send a shudder down my spine when I have to proclaim him as a wise yoga guru. By tradition yoga gurus live in sack-cloth and ashes. Baba Ramdev has taken this tradition literally wearing only the gamcha of a poor man but otherwise travelling by chartered planes and making mediterranean cruises, having private islands, all the while pandering to the needs of the wealthy and vulgar. It is incredible that somebody like him would have the gumption to fight against black money and claim that he has cured 10 crore (hundred million people) people!!!

Anna Hazare has little to throw light on except that he lives as a Gandhian for those who know little about Gandhi.

Egged on by TRP seeking TV channels that are anchored by those who revel in slander and gossip, the country is going through a very messy and completely undignified politically messy situation.

Is there no anchorman who would say that the baba is a hoax? Do we know so little about yoga? Do we only marvel about Baba's yoga tricks like any intelligent Texan such as George Bush?

Finally, it wont make any difference to the way we live. We are like that only. Still ...

The way these things are being handled I would even agree with the very weak Advani that Manmohan Singh is a weak prime minister indeed. Unless...

Unless Sonia Gandhi has a weak spot and Ramdev has found it so that we have four cabinet ministers running to the airport ...

Unless it serves Mrs Manmohan Singh's vanity that she finally found a way to get at Sonia Gandhi.

Unless America is out to detabilize India (of course always) so as to get its economy and Walmart going.

Who knows?

Where are we going?!!

What is this madness when a yoga fakir naked in everything except his material gains, should preach a morality to the vocally screeching part of the Indian nation fed by a limelight seeking multimedia firefly?

Bliss will it be in this dusk to be dead?

Or shall we, as heirs of glory, rise out of our slumber against this tyranny of very very common men?

Dangers of being 6'5" Tall: Osama's Burden

This blog is written after seeing scenes of jubilation of american youth (some dressed as superman or someother superhero) on TV following the courageous attack of American (I don't know why we say American when we mean US) commandos into the mansion of Osama Bin Laden near Pakistan's military academy. Bin Laden was guarded by his loyal followers whom, miraculously, nobody had noticed all these years!! If true, it would really mean something incredibly smart about Osama and his disguise considering he was 6'5" tall.

I am at heart and by tradition a Buddhist and am a fan of the original Gandhi of the non-violence strategy. I avoid stamping on insects and ants. I dont like hunting down of living beings even if they have long been dead physically.

All nations have had more than their share of losses in un-necessary war-like activities. The deaths when the towers came tumbling down are tragic.

Yet, I cannot imagine how a man can be so dreaded by US that he had to be hunted by all the sophisticated US and NATO spy and satellite technologies and be killed as a terrorist so disdainfully, seretly, and so quickly as soon as they found him just to fulfill a ten-year promise made by a not-so popular past president.

Obama himself rode to office riding on the unpopularity of the earlier president's policies. He promised and tried an early pullout from Afghanistan. He was told of the realities of life by his Afghan advisers and Obama became more of what a regular WASP president would have been. Obama required to fulfill the ten-year promise to boost his WASP image now threatened by the republican right.

Osama Bin Laden was unknown to me until the twin-tower calamity. His name influenced my life because of the way he frightened some of the more prominet residents in the apartment complex I lived in. These people were small, very small, compared to Osama.

The story below may not be directly related to Osama, but reflects on the mentality of smaller people.

Some years ago, shortly after 11/9/2001, when the twin towers of New York collapsed, Osams Bin Laden became a household name. With the help of George Bush's publicity Osama became less of a villain than a more convincing president of America could have made him. Muslims in general became suspect, however, in the middle-class families all over the world. More than the Muslims, suspicion fell on dependents of smugglers and building mafia who reportedly financed housing complexes. Osama was declared a dangerous terrorist in India and anyone who dared support Osama was in danger of being declared a public enemy. Builders took special care to be seen to as enemies of Osama.

It so happened that I had a friend who was lean and tall and had a beard and looked definitely more wicked than Osama --- which was not that difficult because Osama certainly looked more pious than say images of Saint Francis Xavier in Goan Churches; in my eyes Osama looked something like the white Jesus Christ as imagined by Renaissance artists, except that Osama did not have blondish hair. This friend of mine visited the society where I lived to pay me a social call. At that time, signing the security register of the housing society was irritating to most. It was treated as a joke to younger people who are always spontaneous and true in their judgements. When asked to enter their name, my friend's daughter, who was just entering her teenages, entered it as Osama Bin Laden and family.

This was the opportunity the committee members of our housing society were waiting for, since I had made some spontaneous and true comments about their functioning. In the middle of the night a police inspector came with some members of the committee to say that I should go to the police station because of my association with the dreaded terrorist Osama Bin Laden whom we did host as our guest as per the entry in the society register. I was sleeping soundly and was very irritated at being woken up. I followed the police officer, half dressed and holding my loose pajama with one hand. The housing committee members and their families and friends were waiting in eager anticipation of seeing me being hauled to the police station. I became furious, gestured with my one free hand, perhaps held a fat committee member by his collar even at the risk of my pajama falling, threatened them to come and fight with me man to man if they were men at all, sent the inspector packing and went back to the apartment to sleep.

That was perhaps the most painful impact of Osama on my life.

I also admired the Bin Laden family for another reason. Osama Bin Laden, would have no problem getting genetic code. His tribe is indeed big, Osama being the 17th child of 52 children, Some virility that!

The hunt for Osama Bin Laden itself was undertaken with typical American efficiency. Osama Bin Laden was 6'5" tall and would have had difficulty in disgusing himself, say as a belly dancer in a burqa. So there was no point in looking for disguises that he may have used, except for the obvious one of shaving his beard. Osama Bin Laden did not shave, perhaps because his followers would not have recognised him.

American scientists perfected the science of calculating the height of a man from the length of his shadows. Helicopters with cameras roamed around over Afghan tribals looking for 6'5" men on foot leading a group of people. They then gave orders to eliminate that group by missiles and rockets making sure that the killing of the entire group was achieved. There was little repentance for these acts, as America was at war to protect its institutes and no sign of life in an hostile environment was considered really safe.

One of my imagined friends who was once 6'5" tall surfaced today breathing more easily after Osama's death-announcement. He was looking considerably shorter than what he was. He had gone to Afghanistan to teach Hindi film songs to radio artists when the Osama thing happened. He realized he was in terrible danger because of his height. He had worn stilts to look seven feet tall and escape the attention of cameras. He had lost a leg in a landmine explosion. His life was in so much danger because of the cameras because of his 6'5" original height. He removed his other leg also and with short artificial legs he lost 3-4" and escaped to a less dangerous height.

My imagined friend looked at the news and dismissed them. He had lived in Afghanistan with so many 6'5" tall Bin Ladens all waiting to be captured by US forces. There are so many Osama Bin Ladens nowadays, he said. They have all been kept in very well guarded American prisons.

The true Osama Bin Laden, he said, was killed long ago in a carpet bombing in the Afghan hills. It was a difficult task to convince people that Osama Bin Laden was alive. Even Musharaf would say that Bin Laden was dead. It was advantageous to both the sides to have others believe that a dreaded terrorist like Bin Laden was alive. It helped the profits of the gun-running and gun-making industries. It also helped the TV channels to up their lagging TV profits with a Osama video tape with the assistance of experts who insisted that the Osama images and voices were genuine.

The US had the technology to make genuinely profitable errors. The other NATO countries wanting to make the same profit, found a fraud Bin Laden almost immediately. But they had sent back the man to his own family with a civilized reprimand.

I do not have to say anything more, my imagined friend said, as he hobbled off, looking more like Osama images.

There are many other things my imagined 6'5" friend said, without actually saying them. I only imagined him saying that.

The first thing he said is that there are no tall 6'5" leader in Indian politics. The last tall leader we had was Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Saheb from Baluchistan. You have only midget Khans of the 5'6" types.

Americans at the Pakistan Military Academy were asked to vacate on the pretense of some epidemic outbreak. It seems that during the 11/9 collapse of the twin towers the Jews were also forewarned and they stayed away. This charge has been subjected to serious statistical analysis of Government reports. The percent of death among Jews was 18%. A remark was made about this: "Given the nature of business done in the towers, I would expect that a quarter to a third of victims would be Jewish - probably higher at senior manager levels. Perhaps the next step, Robert, is to determine the seniority of Jewish victims within their organisations, using the bios that are available. How many senior managers died? How many partners? Or were they substantially lower-order employees?"

The planning of the attack on Osama Bin Laden took several days and it may not have been necessary, perhaps, that a secret attack served any purpose, except for propaganda that helped Obama. One could have surrounded the mansion, given its location in Pakistan's military heartland, walked up to the doors, captured and filmed Osama's last terrorist moments.

It would have had more effect on people if Osama Bin Laden was put to trial as they did in the movie Judgement at Nuremburg. I suppose the execution of Jews is less humiliating than the deaths of innocent peole in Twin Towers. They probably did not want to make the same mistake as they did when showing the execution of Saddam who behaved with incredible dignity typically unbecoming of the images they are expected to have.

Osam Bin Laden took part himself personally, it is said, in the exchange of fire with the commandos. This was to be the valid excuse for killing Osama in self-defence and not bringing him to trial that the American people would have loved to say. This is what Obama had said when he wanted the world to see the fair trial of Guanatnamo Bay prisoners.

Osama Bin Laden was shot in the head. I suppose the commandos were so well trained or so equivalently unimaginative that they avoided Osama's fire, walked coolly upto Osama, and shot him in the head. If I was not naive I would have thought that Osama was shot in the head to hide his identity.

President Obama had promised in public that Osama would be given a proper Muslim burial as per his religion. Osama's body was rushed by helicopter and dumped into the sea. Another example of meticulous planning, because it is not easy to find a grave for a tall 6'5" man in a land of pygmies.

Only the vast expanses of the ocean would have been large enough for a 6'5" man whom the world of smaller men saw as a terrorist.

His height and stature may have been his burden.

Kalmadi: Danger of not Belonging

I must confess that the doings of the self-proclaimed moral majority in the context of the very well orchestrated morality campaign has been very discomforting.

The most recent casualty of this campaign, run with the help of select multi-media-influenced, west-imitating, candle-light campaign is the CBI arrest of Suresh Kalmadi.

My discomfort is not because of whether or not I approve of Kalmadi, but because of my perception of the reasons for which the evil cloud around Kalmadi has been spread. It is a result of a concerted media witch-hunt where a few assume the mantle of 1.2 billion people simply because they have monopolized the access to media and thereby exercise their self-anointed right to influence people.

The fact that Kalmadi has thrice been elected as an elected parliamentary representative of the people is dismissed as another convincing example of corruption by a moral brigade again representing the same 1.2 billion people with little evidence but a face-book count without any idea of which agency is controlling the face-book accounts. That is what is discomforting.

I was told by many Maharashtrians ever since I landed in Pune more than twenty years ago that Kalmadi was very corrupt. They usually said this in the same breath as they had said this of other politicians including Sharad Pawar. It was at this time (near 1990) that the prominent Mahrashtrian leader, V. N. Gadgil lost his parliamentary seat in the elections while Kalmadi was growing his wings and gaining national prominence as a sports administrator. Kalmadi spread his influence in Pune so much so that Gadgil felt threatened and Gadgil's followers started going (around 1998) to the Maratha leader Sharad Pawar's camp, rather than be under the leadership of a non-Maharashtrian. Gadgil and his fellow Konkanashta brahmins, after all, were the same tribe that gave the rule of Peshwas in Pune.

Kalmadi may not have been a pure soul but the reputation of a "touch of sin" suited his happy, if seemingly mischievous personality. Kalmadi was alright for me because of this, since I have always been suspicious of saints, if only because of the heavy influence of catholic saints during my Roman Catholic and Society of Jesus learning days.

I have only heard or perhaps even read about his rise to prominence. It seems that at the time (during the mergency) when Indira Gandhi was being looked upon as a villain by the moralirty brigade of the middle class, Suresh Kalmadi ventured to lead a protest in front of the caravan which was taking Indira Gandhi to jail after the emergency and when the government of the very "immaculately" moral Morarji Desai came to power. I liked Kalmadi's spunk at that time because I thought it was extremely unfair the way the JP movement was created to destabilize the Indira Gandhi government with the help of the courts and the bad reputation of Sanjay Gandhi. I also lernt to my surprise, that he was a pilot in the airforce which he gave up to join public life. He always gave the impression of being a gutsy man, including the time after his recent arrest when he tried to be as composed as he could be. I think he was well composed.

One really cannot say that one is so honest that one feels uncomfortable with a sinner. I, for one, am very uncomfortable with saints who speak like saints. Sri sri Ravi Shankar comes to mind as such an uncomfortable saint for me simply because, perhaps, of his alligator smile. Swami Ramdev does not. Ramdev does give hints of forgiving sins. One may be sadder but also, happily, a little wiser for the sinful experience. I am perhaps influenced by the song of by Professor Harold Hill in "The Music Man" (which I saw in my formative early twenties) when he sings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PujvRmxvtao) the "Sadder and Wiser Girl for me"
No wide-eyed, eager,
Wholesome innocent Sunday school teacher for me.

The sadder-but-wiser girl's the girl for me.


I really dont know what corruption means. After all, honesty is something that is different for different environments. Was Robin Hood dishonest? After all, the pindaris plundered for the good of their tribes and for their Maratha rulers. The 2G policy helped the poor man by making the service cheaper and indirectly helped the mobile providers by increasing their sales of mobiles.

An answer that would satisy most (answers.com) is that corruption is "dishonest exploitation of power for personal gain". One does not define what the power is. Financial? Political? Spiritual? Sexual? Poetic? Literary? Patent? physical?.

Can one ever make money for personal gain or otherwise without exploiting the skills of others?

There are people who make money all the time for reasons they themselves may not understand, be they engineers, scientists, yoga teachers, musicians and other artists. I have no complaints against them. They would be good in almost anything.

I am personally a small-time sinner by choice not only because I could have a nervous breakdown if I was confused as a saint of the George Washington kind, but also simply because it is impossible for me to imagine spending a good evening in the company of people who takes pleasure in making money to be stored in Swiss or Seychelles banks for the benefits of the Swiss or the Seychellians. As far as I imagine, the most boring part of an evening with them would be their complete lack of original taste. I am just a petty swindler of the heart-broken kind.

There are various other less tolerable ways of making money. There is bakshish money which you get for services rendered. You can get it as a bearer in a hotel, for a waiter in a restautant, for a pimp to a prostitute of different kinds, sexual or non-, for a courier to an arms dealer, for a prime minister of a banana country, for being a supari killer in various ways which need not include real killing, for being a purohit to a godman or being a TV anchor in a channel with political motives, or maoist revolutionaries who are used to trade in arms with the help of trade in narcotics.

Will I judge the goodness of the much venerated late Sai Baba from his wealth of 40,000 crores and the hospitals he has provided rather than the actual methods by which he has accumulated his wealth. Will I judge the saintliness of Shri Shri Ravi Shankar by his "Art of Living" which appeals to the large majority of people who do not live unless they are told what the living is in simple attractive terms.

Or will I just go by their facial characteristics?

In the picture below there are four godmen of the conventional kind, while the cigar-smoking Castro is another kind of god. Of these six pictures, the conventional godmen have their right eye smaller (left eye as seen by the reader) than their left eye. The right eye is controlled by the more analytic left brain. By this analysis the godmen must be doing considerable analysis besides getting their spontaneous spiritual revelations. Castro and Kalmadi have balanced eyes. Castro's has the happiest image with a touch of sin. Castro's influence worldwide is perhaps the most dominant in my opinion, though I have not actually sat down and counted.

Among the godmen above only the Saibaba did not participate in the democracy-targeting anti-corruption movement. Perhaps it was because he did not have a beard? Were the bearded godmen more corrupt because they did encourage anti parliamentary democracy?

Politicians have their left eyes of the same size as their right eyes. I suppose they have either given up scheming or given up their analytic mind. If they were worried about their image, I guess their left eye (right eye to the viewer) would have shrunk. It seems to do so for Mayawati. For Kiran Bedi both her left brain is calculating and her right brain is worried about her image, or she is looking into the sun.


People who act seem to have a very good balance between their left and right eyes showing an wholesome balance between their left- and right-brain activity. If at all their right eye seems to be more uncertain showing perhaps their concern about their overall image (in my analysis)

The conclusion that I seem to have got at is judging by the way people look at the camera the godmen are the more complicated personalities and more difficult to be taken at their face value than the politician or the actor who become successful for their clean image.

Like the cockroach, corrupt methods have survived the whole of history and religion. It serves as the negative space to project the goodness of people. The morality that judges goodness is a social imposition for controlling/manipulating human behaviour, even if populations of other animals do not have preachers --- except, that their rogue animals have some of the strongest personalities and their queen bees get the largest following.

The Andre Agassi look-alike and "uplifting" science-fiction writer, David Brin, is quoted on the network as “It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.”. I agree with this perhaps, not only because I think I am sane. It is something like saying people who get cancer are attracted to smoking because of their tension-filled lifestyles; this used to be my rebuttal of the relation between tobacco and cancer when I smoked cigarettes. Now I just fume in anger?

It is a truism in India that it is alright to be corrupt as long as there is something to show that benefits the ordinary man, especially those who do not have the opportunity to be corrupt.

Kalmadi's staunch supporters after his arrest are probably not from the local brahmin or maratha community. One of his more vocal supporter is one Ramesh Bagwe who is from the indigeneous (non-Brahmin) dalit community who correctly observed "Kalmadi is innocent and nobody can call him a criminal until proven guilty in the court of law.". Another loyal supporter is Rajani Tribhuvan, former mayor in the Pune Municipal Council, who is reported to have said "We are in a democratic country and nobody can stop us from supporting our leader. If need be, I shall hit the street for Kalmadi, who made, a Dalit woman like me, the mayor of the city."

At what stage does one say that one is corrupt and to what quantifiable degree?

As per school catechism class, I was told of sins of commission and sins of omission. Sins of commission are sins (by ten commandment standards) that you have committed that you should not have. The sins of commissions are good things that you should have done but have failed to do. Of these the sins of omission are the less sinful and may be forgiven.

Forgive me O Lord the man was dying on the street after a bus ran over him but I could not help him because I was late. That would be a sin of omission and you will be forgiven.

Forgive me O Lord, the man was a commission agent breaking up my ancestros' village landscape built over many generations simply because he had a legal right to develop it. So we damaged his bulldozer. That is a sin of commission. You will be punished.

In organized Mafia of any kind (political, financial, religious, scientific, medical) the sins of commission and omission are slightly different. You got a commission and you left us out of it. That is a sin of omission and you will get your supari!

I think as far as execution of public projects where there are sins of commission which require being overlooked. It has been said that Sreedhar would not have finished the Delhi metro project had he not committed himself in various ways. I also think in running an International Games in a country with the seeming disparateness that prevents an outwardly smooth functioning without an insider commitment (such as the Delhi Development Authority), is near impossible.

Kalmadi's most serious shortcoming as far as his role in Maharashtra is perhaps the fact that the established Maharashtrians of Pune did not benefit directly from his rule. Kalmadi rose up the ranks to be head of several important international sports organization because of a credibility in organizing events and a needed pliability in the context of the international requirements when a sporting event is sold as a franchise to various countries. Olympic Associations are notorious for extracting their profits through their franchises for various sporting and commercial goods at the expense of hosting nations --- as China and Greece have discovered.

In the real commercial world, the olympics movement has little to do with healthy minds in healthy bodies. Kalmadi as president of the Indian Olympic association has to keep the interests of the International Olympics Committee in mind especially if he is interested in getting the Olympic Games to India. In the book The Olympic games: a social science perspective" by Toohey and Veal (p 128) there is something about the way the Olypmics programme that isextracted below (click to expand):

At the bottom of the extract is the relevant section on the Omega company which Kalmadi has been accused of favouring. It might have seemed to Kalmadi that if he rejects Omega who have developed (http://www.sportaserviss.lv/files/varia/DOCU_ST_Present1_E.pdf) the entire timing-scoring relevant to the olympic and other games, the chances of the olympic games being held in India would have been jeopardised. Kalmadi would have been perfectly right in thinking so just as Manmohan Singh would have been perfectly right in supporting American interests following Montek Singh Ahluwallia's arguments.

It seems that even if there is a considerable amount of publicity given to the alleged loss of revenue of ~ 100 crores on the Timing-Scoring deal the actual deal for which the CBI seems to have found evidence for is that " AM Films in London was hired in September 2009 to provide services like taxis and public-display television screens for the Queen's Baton Relay which kickstarted the Commonwealth Games."

Kalmadi had written earlier that the relay "... was approved by the executive board including a budget of Rs. 13.13 crore. OC has incurred an expense of Rs. 5.75 crore only." The actual eventual loss as estimated by the most honest would have been about 1.5 crore!

Kalmadi was arrested for theft of all things! The amount involved in the corruption would have been less than the price of the Audi in which he drove down to the CBI office. The actual swindling discrepancy in the relay deal was probably less than the annual salary of a middle rank IT office man and the monthly salary of a middle level CEO.

The amount of theft Kalmadi has been charged with must have been the most humiliating aspect of this case for Kalmadi. Its like being charged with the theft of a candy from my grand-daughter's lunch box, even if my grand-daughter is a lovely dog.

There has been a concerted effort to discredit Kalmadi. Compared to the 100,000 crore rupes scam it started with, it has finally boiled down to less than 0.005% of that amount. Who is behind this effort is not clear.

On the other hand, every body knows that Olympic Games are run for the image of the country even if it incurs a considerable loss. The Chinese spent more than 50 billion dollars at a huge financial loss and considerable national prestige. The Greece made equally impressive losses and squandered their prestige later.

The Commonwealth Games would have added to the national prestige. To do this one could have well understood if some corners were cut given the fact that two successive sports ministers were as as keen as any saboteur to sabotage the games or its organizers.

The national TV channels seemed to be hell bent in destroying any chance at getting any prestige and did not bother to conceal their happiness at every withdrawal of evry important athlete. Wasn't this sabotage a grossly corrupt practice that lowered the nation's prestige just so that it would hit Kalmadi?

The enthusiasm with which Ajay Maken is getting rid of Suresh Kalmadi without aiming for any verdict of guilt from a court immediately suggests, after a little research, that the bigwigs of Delhi --- probably Shiela Dixit herself --- would like to use Kalmadi as a scapegoat (see my blog : The CWG Syndrome in the Bt Brinjal: Part I. Commonwealth Games of 22 sept 2010).

In my (outsider) opinion, this anti-Kalmadi effort must have been orchestrated by those, among others, who think Kalmadi does not belong to their community. Maybe it is the Rahul Gandhi camp which has taken note of the Sanjay Gandhi connection of Kalmadi and would like to rid Pune of this influence. Maybe Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar, who have been so manytimes denied control of Pune municipality because of Kalmadi, that they seized this opportunity to damage Kalmadi.

Who knows?!

Kalmadi would know. He had stopped belonging.

The Kalmadis from Tulunad are a highly respected and ancient scholarly family from Mangalore (see http://www.daijiworld.com/chan/exclusive_arch.asp?ex_id=1421&ex_title=Kalmadi+Footprints+in+Mangalore). Shamarao Kalmadi, father of Suresh Kalmadi, located to Pune via Bombay. The Karnatka High School of Pune is now named after Kalmadi's father and is one of the better schools of Pune. Suresh Kalmadi must have been a lively young man when he joined the airforce, earned his medals, set up a fast food shop in Deccan, met Sanjay Gandhi and became a Congressman, although I am not sure of the sequence.

The sorry point emerging from all this is that Kalmadi has been given a bad name and is being hanged because he does not belong.

Since the time I came to Pune, I have seen Kalmadi in various public functions on TV and even in Public in the Deccan Queen or some train travelling a little boisterously but merrily with his normal middle class family. Kalmadi came across as a jolly man. His phsique dteriorated with time and he wobbled and panted quite a bit when he ran, say, with the torch for the commonwealth games. I noticed that he had shaped up considerably for the better for the opening of the commonwealth games' opening ceremony. He actually made an effort to run up the steps.

We focus on corruption in the same way as we focus on god. We dont know what we exactly mean by corruption just as we dont know exactly what we mean by god, except that we think, without any evidence, that god cannot be corrupt.

The face-book well endowed protestors who think they are the ones who brought justice to Kalmadi maybe, by their ignorance of real motives, be doing a disservice to those from the aam aadmi who "... do some of the hardest work ... who grow our food, run our factories, and fight our wars ... who did not attend Harvard, Princeton or Yale don't drink lattes, have colonics, "do lunch," pay someone to walk our dog, or frighten our children with "green" ... environmental propaganda." This is from an article in praise of Sarah Palin with reference to the "Silent Majority" of America. I am no supporter of Palin but I am definitely a supporter of the notion that the dangerous people are the °self-appointed brainy and cerebral" followers of the moral brigade who pose the biggest threat when they act beyond their awareness.

Youth who protest a lot on a common platform should be aware of Nitezsche's warning:
"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

Should America be afraid of G. K. Chesterton?

The title of this blog is derived from Edward Albee's play "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf" Virginia Woolf is an author who writes to remove illusions about the upper class. She does not actually appear in the play. It is her spirit that is reflected in the play.

What the title could mean is whether America should be afraid of G. K. Chesterton's revelations on America.

When as a teen-age child, studying in a Roman-Catholic school in Madras (set up for the orphans of the British Army, during their early colonial days) and following the Cambridge exmination system, we had for our examples of essays, the writings of sevral English essayists. One of them was G. K. Chesterton, whose style of writing was one that my elder brother liked and we followed in liking GKC. I remember one essay which caught my attention and cast (at least partly) my philosophy towards life. The essay of more than a hundred years (1909) ago is titled "The Advantages of having One Leg"

Now, in the age of the internet, I could find this essay easily. The first line of the essay struck me at that time. It was: A friend of mine who was visiting a poor woman in bereavement and casting about for some phrase of consolation that should not be either insolent or weak, said at last, "I think one can live through these great sorrows and even be the better. What wears one is the little worries." "That's quite right, mum," answered the old woman with emphasis, "and I ought to know, seeing I've had ten of 'em."

The modern world is plagued by the little worries. The biggest countries are plagued the most. As GKC wrote within the next few sentence "But I am afraid that the maxim that the smallest worries are the worst is sometimes used or abused by people, becasue they have nothing but the very smallest worries."

In this same essay GKC would write: To appreciate anything we must always isolate it, even if the thing itself symbolises something other than isolation. ... ... One Tower of Giotto is sublime; a row of Towers of Giotto would be only like a row of white posts. The poetry of art is in beholding the single tower; the poetry of nature in seeing the single tree; the poetry of love in following the single woman; the poetry of religion in worshipping the single star. And so, in the same pensive lucidity, I find the poetry of all human anatomy in standing on a single leg. To express complete and perfect leggishness the leg must stand in sublime isolation, like the tower in the wilderness. As Ibsen so finely says, the strongest leg is that which stands most alone.

GKC wrote this essay when his legs were " ... unequally balanced, the helplessness or dislocation of the one leg may find compensation in the astonishing strength and classic beauty of the other leg." In this body of nations which is our world, a weak (say, by material standards) country would be a weak leg which would admire the strong one. Supposing two countries were strong, and the body "... had really two legs. Two legs were superfluous and irrelevant, a reflection, and a confusion. ... ... That having had one good leg he should have another--this would be to use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do. She (Mrs. Mountstuart Jenkinson in Mr. George Meredith's novel) would have been as much bewildered by him as if he had been a centipede.

America is perhaps now worrying whether there is a second leg growing strong, when it could imminently lose it eminence, if it has not done so already.

Many years later (middle 1990s) in Pune I found a tattered old copy of Chesterton's book "What I saw in America" in a shop that buys old printed matter and sells them to those who would make pulp out of them for more profitable purposes, such as packing boxes, or cardboard (not toilet paper). Among these printed matter are books read by older people when they were younger, and now sold as "raddi" (scrap) by weight. The book did not look great but it was a treasure for me. I always thought, since I started blogging, that I should examine parts of the book in my blogs in the context of what I now think of America and which would naturally be different from Lala Lajpat Rai's (1916) book "The United States of America: A hindu's Impressions and a Study" (found in the same book shop).



I have not done it because there were other more trivial things (such as my science and other blogs) to handle. After extracting by hand the material for the blog from the book, I now find that the book is on the net and can be read by anyone who cares to.

I persist nevertheless, since the comments are my own. I have used, for this blog only the first chapter on "What is America?". This is the viewpoint of one of the best minds of Britain at a time when England was at its intellectual best and deserved its reputation of it being the capital of the Western World! It is another matter that the Western World thought itself to be the whole world.

I will give some extracts (in italics) from this first chapter and add my comments in normal font. The emphasis will, of course, be on GKC's ways of putting things across. As for the answer to the title of the blog, it is left to the reader. You can huff and you can puff, but you will still hope that the house is not blown down.

When I went to to the American consulate to regularise my passports, I was capable of expecting the American consulate to be American. Embassies and consulates are by tradition like islands of the soil for which they stand; and I have often finding the tradition corresponding to a truth. I have seen the unmistakable French official living on omelettes and a little wine and serving his sacred abstractions under the last palm-trees fringing a desert…. The officials I interviewed were very American, especially in being very polite ; for whatever may have been the mood or meaning of Martin Chuzzlewit, I have always found Americans by far the politest people in the world. They put in my hands a form to be filled up … it as very different from any form I had ever filed up in my life. ….

According to Wikipedia "The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel serialized between 1843-1844 by Charles Dickens which he himself proclaimed ... to be his best work ... Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America ... to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilization filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. Dickens would write in the preface of the book "The American portion of this story is in no other respect a caricature than as it is an exhibition, for the most part ... of a ludicrous side, ONLY, of the American character--of that side which was, four-and-twenty years ago, from its nature, the most obtrusive, and the most likely to be seen." In the 1868 postscript he would write "to declare how astounded I have been by the amazing changes I have seen around me on every side--changes moral, changes physical, changes in the amount of land subdued and peopled, changes in the rise of vast new cities, changes in the growth of older cities almost out of recognition, changes in the graces and amenities of life, changes in the Press, without whose advancement no advancement can take place anywhere."

This was three years after Lincoln's assasination.

Securing an American visa for an Indian in independent India is another matter from what GKC experienced. I dont know if one has to still come to the embassy office early in the morning and stand on pavements till the gate is opened by security guards who think they have to be more American than the Americans themselves. One also cannot blame the American embassy official who have no particular reason to be considerate considering what they see as hoards of applicants each one of whom consider themselves as special individuals and nod their heads as ambidextrously and ambiguously to ordinary questions which they perceive as being double entendres.

It is amusing that in my first visit to America, I found a piece of India in a place called Hindustan, (with three dwellings at that time, and pronounced by the local resident as Ind-houston) in Monroe County, Indiana. There is a Hindustan Christian Church there established in 1852(http://www.apertome.com/blog/2007/04/). I think we drove down the old state with some of my younger aquaintances (now lost in some science wilderness) to see the place and ended up with a photo of myself there. Hindustan, Indiana, could be the first Non-Resident India in America as distinct from the hordes of proudly American Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) there telling us Resident Indians what is wrong with India.


Dickens satirical novel on Chuzzlewit family is about their selfishness. This selfishness comes from a life of denial so that one cannot but deny others not only what they have, but also to deny others the opportunity to have what they have just in case the newly rich will be denied the pleasure of conspicuously consuming, since it will not be conspicuous otherwise. In America this selfishness has been regenerated with every wave of immigrants of different ethnic colours.

One of the questions on the paper was, “Are you an anarchist?” … Then there was the question “Are you in favour of subverting the government of United States by force?” Against this I should write “I prefer to answer that question at the end of the tour and not at the beginning.” The inquisitor, in his more than morbid curiosity had then written down, “Are you a polygamist?” … I like to think of the foreign desperado, seeking to slip into America with official papers under official protection, and sitting down to write with a beautiful gravity, “I am an anarchist. I hate you all and wish to destroy you.” Or … “Yes, I am a polygamist all right, and my forty seven wives are accompanying me on the voyage disguised as secretaries.” .. it is reassuring to know that anarchists and polygamists are so pure and good that the police have only to ask them questions and they are certain to tell no lies.

I don't know whether they ask these questions now. In the modern era they dont have to ask questions to track a man's affair. Even close to 1970s, when a friend of mine came back from his visit to the United States, he was greeted back home through a letter from the United States Information Service (USIS), Madras (at that time). How and why did the USIS keep track of my friend so well?

Paul, that was his first name, and I wanted to protest against the Mao-Tse-Tung following wing of communists protesting against the Americans in Vietnam while the Chinese themselves had attacked India. They were to make this protest in front of the USIS. We didn't want to show we supported US policies on Vietnam nor did we want to be seen as supporting the Communist support for China. We had worn aprons of newspapers on which we had written ambiguous slogans such as (I forget the actual slogans) "Long live Chinese Imperialism" and "Down with American Revisionism" (Chinese had used the term revisionism for marxists such as Russians who deviated from marxist premises) and stood in front of the USIS building late ion the evening (near dusk) when the procession reached USIS. We were held firmly by plain clothesmen --- they really had a firm grip by which one understood immediately the authority --- and whisked away from the scene. This was fortunate because the communists were interested in an incident which would have given them more publicity. The police informed us the next day that our lives could have been in danger.

Chesterton did not find the questions laughable. "A man is perfectly entitled to laugh at a thing because he happens to find it incomprehensible. What he has no right to do is to laugh at it as incomprehensible, and then criticize it as if he comprehended it."

He would explain his reasons later, but not before he said some more things.

".. I have stood on the other side of Jordan, in the land ruled by a rude Arab chief, where the police looked so like brigands that one wondered what the brigands looked like. But they did not ask me whether I had come to subvert the power of the Shereef; … It would be esy to argue that Western democracy persecutes where even Eastern despotism tolerates of emancipates. …It would be easy to develop the fancy that compared with the sultans of Turkey or Egypt, the American constitution is a thing like the Spanish Inquisition."

I suppose Chesterton would have looked at the likes of the Israeli cabinet (Israel was not there at that time) occupying Arab land now and would have wondered why the European Jews were there in the first place controlling over the Arabs. He could have also looked at Gaddafi and Yasser Arafat and others and wondered whether a monarchy, or a democracy, or a dictatorship would have been more preferable to the Hegemony of NATO or Israel. Chesterton had written in the preface to his book "The New Jerusalem" To talk of the Jews always as the oppressed and never as the oppressors is simply absurd; it is as if men pleaded for reasonable help for exiled French aristocrats or ruined Irish landlords, and forgot that the French and Irish peasants had any wrongs at all. I am sure GKC's ideas of fairplay would have required some re-examination. He would also write in the same book: "And the burden of it is the burden of Palestine; the narrowness of the boundaries and the stratification of the rock. A voice not of my reason but rather sounding heavily in my heart, seemed to be repeating sentences like pessimistic proverbs. There is no place for the Temple of Solomon but on the ruins of the Mosque of Omar. There is no place for the nation of the Jews but in the country of the Arabs. ... I felt almost a momentary impulse to flee from the place, like one who has received an omen. For two voices had met in my ears; and within the same narrow space and in the same dark hour, electric and yet eclipsed with cloud, I had heard Islam crying from the turret and Israel wailing at the wall."

It may have seemed something less than a compliment to compare the American Constitution to the Spanish Inquisition. But oddly enough, it does involve a truth; and still more oddly perhaps it involves a compliment…America is the only nation in the world that is founded on a creed.. … It enunciates that all men are equal in their claim to justice, that governments exist to give them that justice, and that their authority for that reason is just. … The Spanish Inquisition might be admittedly Inquisitorial; but the Spanish Inquisition could not be merely Spanish. Such a Spaniard, even when he was narrower than his own creed, had to be broader than his own empire.

He might burn a philosopher because he was heterodox; but he might accept a barbarian because he was orthodox.. … the same Church which is blamed for making sages heretics is also blamed for making savages priests.


It does not seem that Chesterton was being mischievous when he wrote about the American vision that all men are equal in the same breath as the Spanish Inquisition (intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy among those who had converted to the Catholic faith from Judaism and Islam and thereby break away from Papal control; I still don't know what it has to do with Higgins shouting "I'd prefer a new edition Of the Spanish Inquisition Than to ever let a woman in my life"). The Spanish Inquisition was ostensibly to safeguard the Spanish King from the intentions of the Pope by adding new converts to his side. The Americans have used the democracy card as an orthodoxy card for their democratic religious which protect democratic institutions that they recognise as democratic. We Indians do not figure in that list as we are not banana ripe enough perhaps.

There is something of the same idea at the back of the great American experiment; the experiment of a democracy of diverse races which hs been compared to a melting pot. …. The melting pot must not melt…. America invites all men to become citizens; but it implies the dogma that there is such a thing as citizenship … The missionary can condemn a cannibal, precisely because he cannot condemn a Sandwich islander. …. The American may exclude a polygamist, precisely because he cannot exclude a Turk.

When we realize the democratic designs of such a cosmopolitan commonwealth, and compare it with our insular reliance or instincts, we see at once why such a thing has to be not only democratic but dogmatic. … Suppose somebody said, “Do let me bring Colonel Robinson down for the weekend; he’s a bit of a crank but quite interesting.” We should not anticipate the colonel running amuck with a carving knife … for these are not among the daily habits of an old English colonel; … If somebody wished to add a Hairy Ainu to the family party at Christmas, we should want to know a little more about it and him. … Is the Hiry Ainu content with hair, or does he wear any clothes? … In short as in the American formula, is he an anarchist?

The Americans are very patriotic, and wish to make their new citizens patriotic Americans. In a word, what is not unique is not America, but what is called Americanization. … And the process, … is not internationalization. It would be truer to say it is the nationalization of the internationalized. It is making a home out vagabonds and a nation out of exiles.


There is an outbreak of Democratic Institutions in the Arab lands by agents of mass-media-control such as Facebook and twitter, who proclaim themselves to be instant agents of freedom from governmental control which can always be found to be corrupt. This movement is only against government corruption and has nothing about corruption at private level. In India there is the real danger of the Lokpal movement becoming something like an inquisition. Either you subscribe to the lokpal or we will fast unto death against you, if you are in the government. Private corruption does not come into their agenda even if they are members of the lokpal drafting committee. In the Spanish Inquisition, there is an accusation and a denunciation during which the property of the accused is either confiscated or used to pay for expenses. The lokpal may end up doing the same.

Americans have nationalities at the end of the street which for us are at the ends of the earth. …. The Declaration of Independence is something that is not only absent from the British Constitution, but something which all our constitutionalists have invariably thanked God, with the jolliest boasting and bragging, that they had kept out of the British Constitution. It is the thing called abstraction or academic logic. It is the thing which such jolly people call theory; and those who can practice it call thought. And the theory or thought is the very last to which English people are accustomed … . It is thetheory of equality. It is the pure classic conception that no man must aspire to be anything more than a citizen, and that no man should endure to be anything less. ...

The word "Americanization" appears in the title of one of the better movies "The Americanization of Emily" that I have seen so far. With all the TV and media images of successive American wars for protecting its democracy, and its counter suicide bombing, the phrase "horrors of war" has ceased to impress as an horror but seems to serves more as a titillation ("there are some disturbing images") for TV channels. The movie itself is about an English driver Emily who, during the war, "... despite losing her father, brother, husband and several cousins to war, it takes the tragic and wholly unnecessary death of her new lover for Emily to realize the imprudence of her idealism, for her to become "Americanized." (see http://www.lewrockwell.com/gee/gee10.html) This loss of faith in lofty ideals is not the Americanization that Chesterton had in mind, I guess. His Americanization, "home out of vagabonds and nation out of exiles" instead describes a loss of another ideal ... that of loss of identity with any other nation or culture but that of the American.

Towards the end of this first Chapter of his book "What I see In America" does some introspection on the actual realities and the illusion which I include, suppressing all desires to comment. The text is eloquent.

The realities are quite another matter, and we shall consider … whether the ideal will be able to shape the realities or will merely be beaten shapeless by them. … But citizenship is still the American ideal; there is an army of actualities opposed to that ideal; but there is no ideal opposed to that ideal. … He need not set himself to develop equality, but he need not set himself to misunderstand it. … He may at least be a philosopher and see that equality is an idea; and not merely one of those soft-headed skeptics who, having risen by low tricks to high places, drink bad champagne in tawdry hotel lounges, and tell ech other twnty times over, with unwearied iteration, that equality is an illusion.

In truth it is inequality that is the illusion. The extreme disproportion between men, that we seem to see in life, is a thing of changing lights, and lengthening shadows, a twilight full of fancies and distortions. ... We find a man famous and cannot live long enough to find him forgotten; we see a race dominant and cannot linger to see it decay. It is the experience of man that always returns to the equality of men; ... It is when men have seen and suffered much ... that they see men as men under an equal light of death and daily laughter. ...

For veritably, in the spirit as well as in the symbol, suns and moons and meteors pass and fill our skies with a fleeting and almost theatrical conflagration; and whenever the old shadow stoops upon the earth the stars return.


The last two lines should be the ephemeral that mighty nations don't discover until they have lost their egos. Indian mindsets aim at being ego-less like a true old civilization.

The return of a new Gandhi could generate the desired Americanization of the Indian youth who perceive themselves to be more equal than some others.


In his essay "Tremendous Trifles" Chesterton would write "I have my doubts about all this real value in mountaineering, in getting to the top of everything and overlooking everything. Satan was the most celebrated of Alpine guides, when he took Jesus to the top of an exceeding high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the earth. But the joy of Satan in standing on a peak is not a joy in largeness, but a joy in beholding smallness, in the fact that all men look like insects at his feet. It is from the valley that things look large; it is from the level that things look high; I am a child of the level and have no need of that celebrated Alpine guide. I will lift up my eyes to the hills, from whence cometh my help; but I will not lift up my carcass to the hills, unless it is absolutely necessary. Everything is in an attitude of mind; and at this moment I am in a comfortable attitude. I will sit still and let the marvels and the adventures settle on me like flies. There are plenty of them, I assure you. The world will never starve for want of wonders; but only for want of wonder.

I subscribe to this view. I am an ancient civilization.

Lokpal II: Fasting Pastimes

On Fasting in General.

Most of us are not corrupt. We take comfort in sayings such as “What doth it profit a man to gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul.”
Some of the times it is perhaps because we are too lazy to "gain the whole world".
Some of the times we don't have an opportunity to be corrupt.

Fasting against corruption is a matter we think we understand because no gain is involved esecially if one is not fasting for a public cause oneself. We prefer others to do it perhaps for the same reason that we are not corrupt.

It is good for our soul, or so we think, which would be enough.

Fasting regularly is one of the more common eating habits especially when we are not corrupt.

We do it to also purify our digestive tracts (for which we can find solid if not concrete evidence) along with our soul (which we don't really know where it is) most times.

What is interesting is that, for those who are able to afford it, the fasting menu is quite rich and rather tasty. Fasting of the starving kind is not what one has in mind when we Indians conjure up images of fasting.

Moreover. fasting food in India need not kill one faster than fast food.

The British were probably of the type who, like me, were impressed by voluntary fasting, which they may have misunderstood, as I did, as voluntary starving. It is amusing to think that the clever Krishna-like Gandhi may have known about this when he threatened the British with a fast.

All but one of his fasts were under British rule.

His last fast was after Independence --- in January 1948 --- for seeking communal peace in Delhi which resulted in a peace pledge between the communities after six days when he gave up his fast. One community which knew about fasting food perhaps could not stand Gandhi using fasting as a tool against his own community.

So why does one believe that one is going to fast unto death?

For one, as Gandhi himself said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."Martin Luther King, Jr. seems to have said " If a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live." Most of us would say that that's what we do in any case: to spend our life till our death.

There is a difference, of course. Both the Indian and American Gandhi's were killed for their beliefs. That is what they meant perhaps. To oppose by their examples those who they thought were oppressive to such an extent that they (the Gandhis) had to be killed by those they opposed. They did not need to fast to die for their cause.

For a fast to be effective, one must be judged by the way one wears the Gandhi cap.

When Gladys in Dorian Gray says “… all good hats are made out of nothing”. Lord Henry interrupts with (with perhaps the same logic that gives Newton’s third law): “Like all good reputations, Gladys ….Every effect that one produces gives one an enemy. To be popular one must be a mediocrity.”

What the author means by "mediocrity" is not clear since the author is Oscar Wilde. What is probably meant is that one must have a simple common perception regrding weaknesses which are easily identifiable.

Gandhi's Experiments with Fasting.

Gandhi fasted several times for less than seven days mostly. In keeping with Lord Henry's observations about falling in love mentioned earlier, each time Gandhi fasted, the effect of his fasts had greater intensity.

Gandhi's fasting was rarely tagged as a political weapon but rather as one for "upliftment of the soul" if one may call it that.

It is difficult, however, to realize that Gandhi, idolized by all, could set unreasonably high "upliftment" standards for his own family! His first fast was for seven days against his own son who kissed a teenage girl in Gandhi's neighbourhood in Phoenix, Durban. Gandhi himself may not have understood the urges of a teenager as he was married when he was only thirteen. However, as a result "Manilal’s actions were always tempered by the fact that Gandhi would punish himself through fasting when displeased with his actions."(from "Gandhi's Prisoner: Manilal Gandhi as Son and South African Dissident" by Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie).

Gandhi must have learnt from this unreasonable act. He probably thought, because of his son's reaction, that he required becoming a Father figure for the Indian Nation.

His first fasting for the nation's problems was perhaps by accident. The textile labourers in Ahmedabad were paid poorly and Gandhi organized a strike by them demanding a 35% increase in wages. The strike was about to be broken because the striking workers agreed to a proposal of a 20% wage increase. The impression (true) was spread that Gandhi belonged to people who 'come and go in their car' and 'eat elegant food' without knowing the agonies of starving. It was then that Gandhi came up ('unbidden and all by themselves the words came to my lips' Gandhi would write unconvincingly in his autobiography later) with “I cannot tolerate for a minute that you break your pledge. I shall not take any food nor use a car till you get a 35 percent increase.” This was Gandhi, the fast-thinker.

In 1919 when he was at the Sabarmati ashram far away for the Jalianwallah Bagh massacre, he did a penitential fast in for three days in Ashram claiming an exaggerated 52,000 deaths. He saw his opportunity of abjuring violence as a method of protest (and perhaps to neutralize Subhash Chandra Bose) and also perhaps to ensure among the British rulers that he was the more reasonable person. He fasted for five days after the Chauri Chaura incident of 5 February 1922 when 21 constables and a sub-inspector were burnt alive inside the police station. He began a 21 day fast in 1924 for Hindu-Muslim amity, when he "... took upon himself the sins of his Hindu and Muslim compatriots ..." .

Gandhi was also against the reservation system when he started his first “fast unto death” in 1932 to demand an abolition of a separate electorate for Harijans (a name given to them by Gandhi, which meant actually that the childen of god would be untouchables in India). This demand for a separate electorate was from Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a graduate from Columbia University who adopted the suited and booted dress of the upper class so that the voice of the untouchables would be heard, probably as a reaction to Gandhi who would adopt the dress of the poor so that the poor would identify with him. After six days of fasting the British Government accepted Gandhi's demands.

It would seem that Gandhi went on the fast track when he had to change mindsets more than obtaining a political objectives.

Did Potti Sriramulu have to die?

Post Independence, Potti Sriramulu actually fasted for fifty-eight days to death demanding a separate state of Andhra, even though Nehru agreed to his demands after fifty days of fasting.

Who benefited by this death? Did his death serve the purpose of those who had prepared themselves for this eventuality?

After Potti Sriramulu's death, violence was fanned vigorously by Communist ambitions. It is claimed that it was this violene that hastened the formation of the new Andhra Pradesh. It was the first state to be formed based solely on linguistic considerations. The Telugu-speaking Andhra Pradesh contained the Telugu-speaking Telangana region also.

Subsequent events show that while fasting can bring about a result, it is not always a desired result for many others. Andhra Pradesh was initially formed with Kurnool as its capital. The poorer Telengana region felt betrayed when its capital, Hyderabad, was made the capital of the integrated Andhra Pradesh. The people of the Telengana region felt always alienated from the richer Andhra regions. Now, we have a Telangana leader (KCR) fasting-unto-death (for a short while) demanding a Telangana state.

Anna Hazare (Anna could be the equivalent for dada in bengali which usually means an elder brother whom you respect) is a different person. He should be especially followed for his work that began in 1975 on creating a model village based on using traditional methods for water conservation, grazing land management and improving the environment of the barren drought-prone village, Ralegan Siddhi, in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. It is this that brought him into prominence and resulted in introducing different Model Village schemes in his state.

He did not have to fast for this. He did it by example.

We have many things to learn from Anna Hazare and his "model village" development. He was a simple army driver who had to return to his barren village. He fought against desolation and was influence by saffron-dressed Swami Vivekananda to resurrect himself and his village.

He has also a very impressive record in his fight against corruption. He started in 1995 when he perhaps thought that the new BJP-Shiv-Sena government of Maharashtra would be more amenable. He started his fight for rights to information (RTI) struggle in 1998 by observing maun or silence which to many would be more difficult than fasting. He won his RTI fight after he successfully used his fasting strategy in August 2003 to get overwhelming popular support for RTI. It was conceded after 12 days of fasting.

I worry about his simple background and the way he may be molded or may have been influenced by the modern media-savvy spirits.

The ordinary people of Maharashtra remain very hard working with little time to be corrupt. Maharashtra was the first state to pass the Lok Ayukta bill in 1972, and the first state to get the RTI act which was passed for the entire nation.

But those who have the time, inclination and the money use it to their full advantaqe giving Maharashtra the reputation of being the most corrupt state. So much so that their most powerful politician, Sharad Pawar, had to sit out of the government committee on Lok Pal as a first condition.

In the meanwhile it is perhaps important to know amongst the hoopla of the fight against corruption by self-elevated giant spiritual leaders there were seven relative dwarfs: the seven Gandhians included six freedom fighters (they would have been less than thirty when Gandhi was shot). These were: Shambhu Dutta (92 years, has been trying to introduce the Lokpal bill for the past 15 years), R. Saradamani Devi (84 years), K.P. Sahu (79 years), Murari Lal Gupta (94 years), Govind Narain Seth (78 years) and Amarnath Khanna (89 years).

We wonder where they were positioned, if they were positioned at all, before the TV cameras.
